[44] HealthyPaws Pet Insurance Customer Reviews (2022)

iHeartDogs surveyed our readers in 2022 about their experience with HealthyPaws and other major pet insurance providers.

Overall HealthyPaws received a 4.4 out of 5 rating:

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Pro: Easy to submit claims, quick turnaround time on payments. Con: Price goes up each year - HealthyPaws review by Jennifer, Canton

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - They have no max payout and claims are processed w/in a couple days! - HealthyPaws review by April, Powhatan

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I have never had a problem with a claim being paid promptly or as I thought it should be (and there have been a lot). My rate has really gone up…more than I would have expected but I have had (and continue to have due to allergies) many claims so it is still worthwhile. - HealthyPaws review by Marcie, Madison

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I Like they have always reimbursed me for treatments for both my dogs. No dislikes . - HealthyPaws review by Susan, Petaluma

⭐⭐⭐ - When one of our dogs died 2 winters ago I called Healthy Paws right away to cancel the insurance policy for him. I made it clear that we still had 2 other dogs who were to continue coverage. However, about a week later I found out that all 3 dogs had been cancelled. It took me numerous phone calls, emails, letters, inquiries before the 2 living dogs got reinstated. Luckily the dogs did not experience any health issues during that time. Healthy Paws said that they would not be covered til they were again under coverage. The company did not act overly concerned or sorry for the error. Continue to search for other options. - HealthyPaws review by Leatha P., Colorado Springs

⭐⭐⭐⭐ - they keep raising premiums, as your dog gets older, even when you do not file a claim. And they are suppose to raise them when vet cost go up. - HealthyPaws review by Tony, Philadelphia

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Always been easy to work with, file claims, and get reimbursed 😍 - HealthyPaws review by Linda, Lenoir City

⭐⭐ - They randomly seem to increase the premiums. I don’t like a lot of the policy’s like if you get referred to a specialist they won’t pay for the exam. I’d probably leave them but now I have a dog who’s been having issues and it’s harder to move. I won’t use them again with a new puppy for sure. - HealthyPaws review by Tory, Ithaca

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Premiums go up even though I’ve never used it - HealthyPaws review by Ann, Ormond Beach

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Easy to file claims and they respond quickly. I understand what is covered and what isn't. - HealthyPaws review by HELENE, Palos Hills

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Quick payment response - HealthyPaws review by Marilyn, Santa Barbara

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Able to pick the coverage I want. Payments are fairly fast. - HealthyPaws review by Joyce, Novato

⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Need to pay for yearly exams and dental cleanings. - HealthyPaws review by Kelly, Wrightsville

⭐⭐⭐ - I like the price. I don’t like the fact that I have to pay upfront and then get reimbursed. I want an insurance that will pay the veterinarian directly, like human health insurance. Why do I even have insurance if I have to pay the vet and if I don’t have enough to cover the cost, I will have to put my dog down. This doesn’t make sense. I should just put the money into an account and only use it for emergencies. - HealthyPaws review by Colette, Deerfield Beach

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - No arguments over what vet charges - HealthyPaws review by Case, Vacaville

⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Easy to upload claims through the app and they are quick to provide reimbursement. - HealthyPaws review by Karen, West Roxbury

⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Nothing to dislike yet. - HealthyPaws review by Amy, Sonoma

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Pay you back quick - HealthyPaws review by Bill, Philadelphia

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Very quick with reimbursements. - HealthyPaws review by , Salem

⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I love how easy it Is to use and everyone is so friendly. I’m honestly annoyed at the fact my rates have increased a cumulative of over $50 in the past two years… even my car insurance hasn’t gone up by that much. However, the rate I pay is lower that what other companies would offer if I were to sign with them now. - HealthyPaws review by Catherine, Los Angeles

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Easy to file claims - HealthyPaws review by Debbie, Jefferson

⭐⭐⭐⭐ - HealthyPaws review by Jo, Hingham - The app was up dated and now doesn’t work properly taking a picture of the invoice - HealthyPaws review by Andrea, Olympia

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Fast turnover for claims. Had the last one close in one day. Great customer service reps. - HealthyPaws review by Krystelle, Antioch

⭐⭐⭐⭐ - It was the highest rated on several surveys and they did send me a check pretty quickly but they are expensive and so I only have my older, bigger dog covered since the fee has gone up a lot. - HealthyPaws review by J.T., Morgan Hill

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Monthly premium is not the cheapest but they have been a fantastic company! They process claims quickly and have not denied any claim (no preexisting conditions and I only send claims that are allowed per the contract) - HealthyPaws review by Janet, Unknown

⭐⭐⭐ - Coverage is good but monthly cost has almost tripled in the 6 years we’ve had it with no major claims. What started as a reasonable rate is now ridiculous for a 6 year old dog and in comparing other companies with the same coverage they are all about the same overpriced rate. - HealthyPaws review by , Brooklyn

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - There is no cap and reimbursement is super fast. - HealthyPaws review by Cindy, Milwaukee

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Healthy Paws has excellent customer service. My claims have all been settled and funds received within a week. I have 2 dogs, both are insured, both have had several claims. My 10-year-old has copper storage disease. Healthy Paws has paid every claim for her disease quickly and with no extra paperwork other than an itemized paid invoice. I highly recommend them. - HealthyPaws review by Lace, Palm Bay

⭐⭐⭐⭐ - They have paid quickly and without issue. Claims are easy to file.
I recommend purchasing pet insurance as early as possible because any issues your pet is diagnosed with prior to having them insured will be determined to be a pre existing condition and not covered by the insurance company. - HealthyPaws review by Heike, Portland"

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I love the 90% return. I dislike after an update on the app, I can no longer use it to take a clear picture of an invoice for submission. - HealthyPaws review by Andrea, Olympia

[5] Prudent Pet Insurance Customer Reviews (2022)

iHeartDogs created surveyed our readers in 2022 about their experience with Prudent Pet and other major pet insurance providers.

Overall Prudent Pet Insurance received a 4.5 out of 5 rating:

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - This was my first time purchasing pet insurance and Pati was a big help! She explained everything in an easy to understand way and was there to answer all my questions. Would highly recommend! - Kyla

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Great Customer Service- While searching for pet insurance, I looked into and called multiple services. Stephanie Toppel was really great at answering all of my questions by responding right away and giving me a straight and honest answer. Pet insurance has a lot of ins and outs to it and I now feel very comfortable that I choose the best company for me. - Kari

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - We just signed up with Prudent Pet and are already extremely impressed with them. I got quotes from 6 different pet insurance companies and I love the fact that Prudent is one of the very few that offer preventative care as well. We have a big family so every penny counts- including annual exams, shots, etc because it all adds up! I got a quote on Sunday afternoon from their website and first thing Monday morning a customer service representative called me to follow up on my quote. None of the other companies did that at all whatsoever. She also spent 45 minutes on the phone with me explaining every detail of the coverage with me and letting me know my options. She answered every question I could think of and was so patient and friendly about it despite me taking up so much of her time with my endless inquiries. She made me feel right at ease. I’m really excited for my dog’s new coverage we can’t wait to see how it all works out. I feel relieved that now I don’t have to worry about some expensive bill coming up that we can’t afford. This makes it much easier on our family and gives us a peace of mind that we can give our dog quality care at any time. - Alexandra

⭐⭐⭐⭐ - We just purchased our policy so I can’t review on the coverage or claims process, but customer service was exceptional. Patricia Ostaszewski was great and assisted us with all of our questions and concerns and set up the policy for us. I do wish the policy listed more details regarding coverage. - Ariel

⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I just bought this plan. So far no problems. The only thing was after I applied the info said I would get an email for me to set up my password, I didn’t get one so I called and they told me what to do. Everything ok now. - Patricia

Firefighter & Pit Bull Advocate Adopts Tiny Puppy Saved From Blaze

Firefighter adopts puppy

Firefighter Mike Thawley has been saving lives in more ways than one. He has a soft spot for dogs in need, so when the Sacramento Fire Department rescued a Pit Bull puppy near a debris fire, Thawley knew there was more he could do to help them. Five years ago, he fostered and adopted a Pit Bull that was saved by Sacramento firefighters. So, he decided to do it again!

The tiny puppy is now living his best life with Thawley’s family, but his journey to get there wasn’t easy. Thawley hopes this pup’s story will help end harmful Pit Bull stereotypes.

Puppy Saved From Fire

The innocent puppy, now named Loki, was found near a debris fire. Despite being close to the flames, the pup didn’t have any injuries after. So, the firefighters sent him to the Front Street Animal Shelter to help him get adopted.

Loki’s story touched Thawley, so he chose to foster him through the shelter until the dog found his forever home. The firefighter had done something similar in the past. Five years ago, he fostered his Pit Bull named Chunk, who was chained to a fence and had mange when she was rescued. So, he wanted to provide comfort for Loki just like he had for Chunk.

However, it didn’t take long for Thawley to fall in love with Loki. After a few weeks of fostering, he decided to adopt the puppy and welcome him into the family.

“He will be adopted, and he will have a big sister named Chunk because Loki will be living with us,” Thawley said.

A Forever Home!

Thawley named the pup “Loki” after the God of fire. The Sacramento Fire Department posted a video of Thawley talking about how Loki stole his heart. In the video, Loki seems to adore his new big sister. But he has a lot of energy to keep his family on their toes!

While the family loves all dogs, Thawley adores Pit Bulls most. Since they’re often unfairly judged, he advocates for them and shows the world how wonderful they can be. They deserve love just as much as any other dog.

Facebook

“He’s a tri-color pit bull mix, a breed that is misunderstood, but definitely one of the most family-friendly and loving breeds out there,” Thawley said.

The Sacramento firefighters did an amazing job saving Loki and Chunk. And Thawley saved them again by opening up his home to them. Sometimes, all a dog needs is a little love and support to thrive!

Drone Rescue Is A Last Resort For Starving Dogs Stranded By Volcano

Saving La Palma Dogs

For over a month, several dogs have been trapped on the island of La Palma, Spain with no escape. The Cumbre Vieja volcano has been erupting, spreading hot lava and volcanic ash to nearby areas. Sadly, it hasn’t shown any signs of stopping, and many families were forced to flee without their furry friends. Many dogs climbed to ash-covered roofs to escape the lava, but now they’re stranded.

Officials have found ways to drop dog food via drones, but it was only a temporary solution to a bigger problem. Now, they’ve finally found a way to rescue some of the most at-risk dogs.

Drones to the Rescue

Aerocamaras, a group of drone operators, recently gained permission to use massive drones to save three scrawny dogs trapped by the volcano. The pups have spent weeks alone in their abandoned yard, which is covered in volcanic ash. While drones have been feeding the dogs, the pups have eaten very little and need to be saved.

Jaime Pereira, the CEO of Aerocamaras, explained that they will use a 110-pound drone with a large net to capture the dogs and fly them to safety. They will need to scoop up the dogs in the net and fly them 1,476 feet. It’s a mission that will require extreme patience and focus.

YouTube

“It’s the first time an animal is being rescued with a drone and the first time it has to be captured,” Pereira said. “If that’s the last option that the dogs have? Then we’re going after them.”

A Risky but Worthwhile Attempt

However, this drone rescue is a tedious process that will depend on how well the dogs cooperate. Drone operators only have a limited time to scoop up the dogs and move them across the lava. Once the drone arrives, it will have four minutes to lure a dog to the net and four minutes to carry them back.

YouTube

“What we don’t want is to run out of battery when flying over the lava,” Pereira said.

Currently, operators are running test flights to ensure that the final rescue goes smoothly. Yet, they’re unsure how the dogs will react to the drone. They could come toward the net, but they could also be terrified of the unfamiliar machine. Their reactions will affect the results greatly.

Facebook

It’s unclear how long the volcano will be active, so it’s crucial to get the dogs out of there as quickly as possible. These are just some of the many pets in La Palma that need rescuing. Many others are under the care of The Benawara Plant and Animal Protection Society for the time being.

If you live in the area, consider adopting or fostering one of the many homeless pets to open up more room in shelters. Otherwise, you can donate to make a difference.

Hero Dog Saves Feathered Friends From An Alligator Attack

Beauty, the black Labrador Retriever, is slowly recovering after saving her ducky siblings from an alligator attack. Since they were tiny ducklings, Beauty has looked after Crest, Downy, and Dot and treated them with love and care.

She was even once thought to be “missing” when the ducks wandered off and got stuck in a thornbush. Beauty stayed by their sides and laid next to the bush until her parents came to find them. So, when an even bigger and scarier threat came along, this brave pooch was ready to defend her flock.

Beauty with duckling
Facebook

The beautiful 8-year-old dog lives with her family and their pet ducks on the shore of Lake Powell in Panama City Beach, Florida. The day of the attack started out the same as any other, with Beauty following closely and keeping an eye on her feathery best friends. But it soon turned terrifying when Beauty’s mom heard noises that indicated something had gone terribly wrong.

“I just went into panic mode. I heard a commotion, and honestly, I thought another dog had gotten in the yard. It wasn’t a bark like I recognized from Beauty,” said Misti, Beauty’s mom.

Pet Ducks
Facebook

When Misti made it to the shore, she noticed that her ducks were overtly flustered, that Beauty was soaking wet, and that there was an alligator laying on the sand at the water’s edge. Misti immediately realized that Beauty wasn’t okay. She couldn’t stand up when called and wasn’t moving. So Misti immediately ran to Beauty, picked her up, and drove her to VetsPets Animal Hospital.

“The alligator was the first thing I saw because it was right at the edge of the water. Once I went down, there was just blood everywhere. There had clearly been a fight,” said Misti

Once Dr. Barr had examined her, he knew that Beauty was in rough shape. She had sustained several serious injuries. Beauty had massive soft tissue wounds and deep gashes on her back. She also had a broken leg and would require two surgeries.

Luckily, this brave girl made it through the long, difficult procedures and is now expected to make a full recovery in six to eight weeks.

Facebook

Much to her loving family’s relief, Beauty finally returned home from the hospital on September 29th. That 16-day hospital stay felt like forever. While she is still recovering, Beauty will continue healing at home and will be in the capable hands of her loving mom.

Misti has since shared that Beauty is walking much better, but they are continuing to keep a close eye on her wounds. While Beauty is expected to make a full recovery post alligator encounter, one of the ducks did not make it home and is presumed to have been eaten.

Facebook

Misti shared that this is not the first time she has seen an alligator swimming in Lake Powell. She said she also spotted one during the aftermath of Hurricane Michael. She doesn’t, however, think this is the same gator.

Since the attack, Beauty’s dad has reached out to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. They came to remove the gator, but were unable to locate it. They plan to return to look for it again.

‘Broken-Hearted’ Pup Eaten By Fleas Curled Up On Road, Too Weak To Keep Going

In the middle of a busy street in Toronto, Canada, there was a tiny puppy all alone. People went by him without even acknowledging his presence. Strays are a common sight in this region of the world and to those who were passing by, he was just another one among many. But we know that isn’t true. We understand that each life is precious! We realize that each life is worth preserving.

Image/Story Source Credit: YouTube Video

He was in so much pain. Because of the number of fleas on his body, it was beginning to give out. Anemia was caused by each flea that drank his blood. This baby required assistance, and he needed it right away! He curled up into a ball and broke down in tears as his tiny heart shattered. He believed himself to be worthless, but that would soon change.

Image/Story Source Credit: YouTube Video

A lady who works for a local rescue came upon the puppy and rushed over. She picked him up, noting that he had thousands of fleas. He also had Demodex mange, which necessitated immediate treatment by the veterinarian and the woman who saved him. They set him on the examination table and began treating him right away. He required a flea bath as well as extensive medical testing to assess his anemia level. They also needed to begin administering medication to cure his mange with antibiotics and daily medicated baths immediately.

Image/Story Source Credit: YouTube Video

The puppy felt secure, particularly since she had saved him. She promised to find him the finest forever home. She phoned a friend of hers who would be a great match for the pup and her friend accepted to take it. He was able to go right over to his new mother’s house once he was medically cleared.

The brave little guy was overjoyed with his new abode. On the streets, he had been frostbitten and hungry. He had everything that a little pup could want. He also had a canine sibling to keep him company, and they got along swimmingly. The puppy grew stronger. He especially liked curling up in his comfy bed after a long day of adventuring outdoors. This little pup will no longer suffer from the cold hard ground!

1- year later, the puppy isn’t as tiny as he used to be, but he’s still smiling! We’re happy that he’s doing so well and that his past is where it belongs: in the rearview mirror for good. His tiny shattered heart has been mended once again.

You’re going to LOVE the video below and the happy ending!

Couple Spreads The Word About This Accidental Poisoning After Tragically Losing Their Two Dogs

A Utah family wants pet owners to be aware of a winter hazard far more deadly than frostbite. Katrina Burrell and her husband said goodbye to their 2 dogs Monday morning after they were diagnosed with Ethylene glycol poisoning.

The chemical is most commonly found in antifreeze and has a naturally sweet taste that attracts animals.

It started last Saturday night when the couple noticed 9-year-old Pit Bull mix, Marley, and 1 1/2-year-old Terrier, Autumn acting drunk. They were stumbling, falling over, and walking into things. By Sunday, Marley was suffering seizures and both pets were vomiting and defecating in the house.

Image Credit: Screenshot Fox News 13

Burrell rushed them to the local emergency vet, who tested their blood for Ethylene glycol. Marley’s test was positive, while Autumn’s was negative. The chemical is only detectable for a few hours after ingestion, and based on the severity of Autumn’s symptoms, doctors knew that she had also ingested the toxin.

Image Credit: Screenshot Fox News 13

The veterinary staff informed the Burrells that Marley was beyond saving and that euthanasia was the only humane option. They offered to treat Autumn at a cost of $3,000 per day but explained that she only had a 25% chance of survival even with treatment.

The couple made the most difficult decision of their lives – they cradled their beloved dogs in their arms, side by side, as a veterinarian ended their suffering.

Image Credit: Screenshot Fox News 13

The Burrells have since searched their home and yard for an explanation as to how this happened. Antifreeze is the most common cause of Ethylene glycol poisoning, but the chemical is also present in some brake fluids, detergents, paints, and cosmetics. They found no such items within the dogs’ reach.

A report from the Ogden, Utah Police stated that a bag of snowmelt product containing antifreeze was found in a neighbor’s yard. They will not be pursuing a case of intentional poisoning since Marley and Autumn had been known to wander off the Burrells’ property and could have ingested it accidentally.

Image Credit: Screenshot Fox News 13

Katrina Burrell hopes that her family’s devastating loss will help educate others about the all-too-real risk of antifreeze poisoning in the winter months and protect other pets from suffering the same fate.

Just 4 ounces of Ethylene glycol is enough to kill a full-grown man. Poisoning results in brain and nerve damage, shock, kidney failure, and if not treated right away, coma and death. If your pet displays symptoms of drunkenness, disorientation, seizures, or vomiting – even if you just suspect he or she came in contact with Ethylene glycol, contact an emergency veterinarian immediately!

Man & The Dog Who Saved His Life In The Strangest Way Die Just Months Apart

Dog and Man Die Months Apart

In 2010, a small dog named Kiko saved his dad’s life, but at the moment, it didn’t seem like it. Jerry Douthett screamed for his wife Rosee to come help him one night. When she entered the room, she saw that Jerry’s toe was gone and Kiko’s mouth had blood in it. It might sound like a horror story, but if Kiko hadn’t done it, Jerry would’ve died.

Kiko’s quick thinking gave Jerry over ten more years of life. But this year, Rosee suffered an unimaginable loss after saying goodbye to both Jerry and Kiko within months of each other. Rosee still remembers Kiko’s life-saving actions like they were yesterday.

A Missing Toe Saves a Life

Over ten years ago, Jerry and Rosee were at a bar to celebrate Rosee becoming an American citizen. Jerry came home very drunk after having several beers, so when Kiko bit off his toe, he barely felt any pain. As it turns out, his big toe had an infected sore for a while, but he kept refusing to go to the doctor. Kiko must’ve smelled something unusual on his foot and did what he could.

With his toe missing, Jerry had no choice but to finally go to the doctor to have it fully treated. When they were there, the doctor informed him that he had diabetes. It’s something he never would’ve learned if Kiko hadn’t taken action.

“His sugar was in the 800s so it was like if it wasn’t treated, it could be fatal for him, going into septic shock,” said Rosee. “[Doctors] heralded Kiko as a hero because if he didn’t do that, he would never have gone to the hospital or discovered he was diabetic.”

Thanks to Kiko, Jerry stayed healthy for a while and became less hesitant about seeing the doctor. Then, in 2020, things went downhill when he struggled with a toothache. He was diagnosed with cancer of the mouth and throat.

Time to Say Goodbye

Jerry went through four rounds of chemotherapy and had 35 radiation treatments. During that time, he slowly lost his ability to talk, eat, and walk. Kiko and their cat named Lucky were there to support him through it all. Jerry passed away in June 2021 at age 58.

Unfortunately, the loss didn’t end there. Lucky the cat died in September, and then Kiko died from kidney disease in October. Both pets were 12 years old, but it still came as a shock to Rosee. It has been a lot of loss for her to deal with at once, but she believes they’re all in a better place now.

“Family members say, ‘I think maybe Jerry took the pets because maybe he needs them more there in heaven than you,'” said Rosee. “I love them so much and when it’s my time, I will meet them there again and we will be a family again.”

Rosee’s friends and family helped her host a benefit concert for Jerry, and she hopes to make it an annual tradition to help others. Since Rosee stopped working after her husband’s death, many kind individuals helped her raise money for the vet bills too. She will always miss her family members greatly, but it’s good to know she’s surrounded by so many kind people who care about her.

Volunteer Firefighters Rescue Dog Tossed Into Rushing Waters By Heartless Owner

Dog rescued from dam

When someone spotted a dog trapped in Lake Wister Dam, Oklahoma, they knew they had to do something. The only way the dog could’ve gotten there is if she swam upstream or was thrown in by someone who didn’t want her. The latter seemed most likely.

A woman named Madison Reneè posted a video of the dog to ask for help. Soon, several people came but realized that the dam was too deep for them to get into. However, the dog was struggling to stand her ground. She could’ve been swept away by the current at any moment, so she needed a miracle. Luckily, help was on the way!

Jumping into Action

A volunteer firefighter named Aaron Capell saw the post online and reached out to fellow firefighters for assistance. A group of over eight rescuers arrived with a boat to rescue the dog. They tied a rope to Capell’s boat and then pushed it further into the dam to get close to the dog. Capell sat on the boat as it went into the water.

The rescuers asked the Army Corps to shut off the dam during the rescue to reduce the flowing water. When Capell reached the pup, he said she was hesitant to accept help.

“Scared, skittish. I talked to her and eventually, she let me pet her,” Capell said.

Eventually, he gained the dog’s trust and pulled her onto the boat. The people on the shore helped pull the boat out of the water, so the dog was finally safe. Mike Young, one of the other rescuers, took the fluffy white dog to the Poteau Valley Humane Society.

A Forever Home Awaits!

The dog’s rescue video touched many people, so the pup (now known as Grace) had several adoption applications in no time. After lots of consideration, James and Paula Watson were chosen to adopt Grace. They recently lost one of their rescue dogs, and they fell in love with Grace’s story.

The couple said there was an instant connection between them and the dog. They said she was just as excited to see them as they were to see her.

“She ran to James immediately and that told us that we made the right decision,” Paula said. “She adopted us as well and that’s always good.”

Grace’s story had a happy ending, but she’s not the only dog that needs saving. Porteau Valley Humane Society has plenty of other animals looking for forever homes, so if you’re looking for a new family member, consider adopting a dog in need.
