Strangers Step In To Save Dog Intentionally Dragged Behind Car

Pit Bull dragged behind car

When some people spotted a Pit Bull mix being dragged behind a moving vehicle in Ohio, they knew they had to act fast. There was no doubt in their minds that the act was blatant animal abuse. If those good Samaritans hadn’t witnessed the horrific event and reported it, the dog would’ve died from severe injuries.

The dog is currently on the road to recovery, but she’s very friendly and optimistic, considering everything she’s been through. No dog should have to go through trauma like this, and it’s heartbreaking that animal abusers are rarely heavily punished.

Dog Dragged Down the Road

The car drove 35 mph for at least 100 yards while the dog known as Oreo was chained to the back and dragged behind. When the car stopped, the driver chained up the dog outside. But luckily, several people witnessed the abuse and called the Youngstown Police Department.

Animal Charity of Ohio took in Oreo and assessed her injuries. She had two broken toes on each foot, and all her paws were degloved. She also had a road rash on her abdomen, several broken nails, and abrasions on all her legs. So, the rescue is doing everything they can to help her recover.

“Despite the horrific abuse Oreo just endured she is still wagging her tail and wants to be held. We will continue to monitor throughout the day, she is resting comfortably right now with pain medication and antibiotics on board,” Animal Charity of Ohio wrote on Facebook.

Oreo still has lots of healing ahead of her, but right now, she’s enjoying her time at the rescue. She’s soaking up all the attention while she receives medications and treatment. Her paws are still painful to walk on, which is understandable. So, the team members at the rescue have made accommodations to keep her comfortable.

“She is carried outside to potty and then back in to rest. We are closely monitoring her wounds and pain level, her medication is adjusted as needed to keep her as comfortable as possible,” the rescue wrote.

Charges are pending, but many dog lovers hope the person responsible will be severely punished. No dog deserves to go through that, especially not a pup as sweet and loving as Oreo.

The rescue hasn’t mentioned if/when Oreo will be available for adoption. However, there are still plenty of other adoptable dogs at the shelter that need homes too!

Coyote Brazenly Enters Home Of Beagle Rescuer Through Doggy Door

A woman in the Woodland Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles unknowingly played foster mom to one additional canine this week when a bold coyote scaled her 6-foot privacy fence and entered her home through the doggy door. Julie Levine runs a non-profit called Canine Rescue Connection, which specializes in rehoming Beagles.

The coyote was caught on Levine’s Ring cameras brazenly entering the home in the middle of the night while she and the dogs were sleeping.

Facebook

“The dogs went crazy, and then I said this happened before with a rat, what else could be out there now?” Levine said.

RELATED: Home Surveillance Captures Coyote Attack & Ultimate Rescue Of Family Dog

Luckily, the coyote had already fled by the time the dogs woke up and caught its scent, so there was no physical confrontation. It wasn’t until Levine checked her cameras to see what the fuss was about that she realized what had happened.

“I think he probably went down the hall, saw what he was up against, and probably skedaddled out of there,” Levine said. “Then when the dogs realized they caught the scent, because they are beagles, they have incredible noses, and went nuts, and that’s why I decided to look at the security camera to see what all the hubbub was about, and turns out, it was a very large coyote.”

Facebook

In total, the predator remained inside her home for about three minutes. This incident comes just days after a coyote attacked another family’s dog in the same neighborhood.

“The son found it when it happened and pulled the dog out of its mouth,” Levine said.

RELATED: After Small Dog Is Carried off by a Coyote, The Neighbor’s Rottweiler Springs Into Action

It is almost unheard of for coyotes to enter homes, but they are known to injure and even kill small pets found outdoors. While they rarely attack humans, their habitat and food sources continue to diminish, making predators like coyotes and mountain lions ever more desperate. A coyote attacked a child at Huntington Beach Pier in April, leaving her with facial injuries.

“They’re definitely very brazen, I mean to go inside the house like they belong there … We know they can scale fences, but we just didn’t think that they would go through the dog door itself and be in the house,” Levine said.

Levine has since boarded up her doggy door. She hopes this incident serves as a warning to other Los Angeles pet parents.

“They are bold, they are smart, they are looking for food, they’re looking for water and they may just bring some friends back the next time around,” she said.

Three Rescue Dogs Find The Perfect Match With Their Three Adopted Human Siblings

It’s hard to believe that Curtis and Roberta Griner could become even more inspiring. The couple are active dog rescuers, having fostered over 70 pups and adopted several of their own over the years.

Now the young family has welcomed 3 new members – Jessica, Victoria, and Veronica – human sisters adopted from Poland.

With the Griners’ 3 rescue dogs waiting at home, the girls arrived in America last month, each with her “own dog” already picked out.

Victoria chose Max, a blond Lab Mix found in the neighborhood and taken in by Roberta and Curtis. Jessica claimed Maggie, a big, squishy Pit Bull Mix once used as a breeding dog before being dumped in a South Carolina shelter.

And little Veronica – who likes to be called Sunshine – chose Red, another Pibble with goofy, over-sized ears and a history of abuse so severe the Griners were not sure if he would ever be able to walk pain-free when he was first rescued.

Roberta always knew that she wanted to adopt children, she even told Curtis about her intentions on their very first date! Despite the long, grueling adoption process, and the fact that it meant being away from their canine children longer than ever before, the couple was determined to bring the girls home.

Initially, Roberta and Curtis had agreed to try adopting a younger child and to bring home no more than two kids, but when they saw Jessica, Victoria, and Veronica, they just knew the girls were meant to be their babies. Jessica, the oldest, even bears a striking resemblance to Roberta’s side of the family.

Once the adoption wheels were set in motion, the Griners decided to break the news to the dogs – after all, they are family, too! They set up an adorable photoshoot complete with fun reveal signs.

Max, Maggie, and Red donned festive tee-shirts and Maggie broke out her best tutu and floral headband for the occasion.

They spent six weeks in Poland over the holidays getting to know the girls and cementing last-minute details before bringing them home. Luckily all went well and on January 19 the plane carrying the new-and-improved Griner family touched down in the United States!

Jessica, Victoria, and Veronica were introduced to a whirlwind of new friends and relatives, not to mention a brand new country, home and tons of new clothes, toys, and gifts.

But more than anything, they were excited to meet the dogs!

The pups instantly bonded to their new human sisters, with Pit Bulls, Red and Maggie taking particular care to watch over little Veronica.

Jessica, Victoria, and Veronica love pitching in with Max, Maggie, and Red’s care – they help with feedings and family walks. The dogs have even taken to sleeping with the girls instead of Curtis and Roberta!

Together the 5 human and 3 canine members of the Griner clan make up a perfectly-imperfect all-American family!

Every Night, Loving Dad Tucks In Rescue Pup He Didn’t Want

Dads are notorious for saying they don’t want a dog. Then, when they actually get to know a dog, they fall in love. Many of them won’t admit it, but they were wrong about not wanting a furry friend in the first place.

For one particular father, he had a specific reason for not wanting a dog. He recently lost a four-legged family member, and he insisted that he didn’t want another. His daughter, Alice Garrido Gallardo, knew the truth, though. She knew that deep down, her dad still wanted a dog to love, but he would never admit it on his own. So, he just needed a little push.

Man’s Best Friend

A stray pup named Jean Grey lived most of her life all alone. When she crossed paths with a kind stranger, they decided to help her find a home. They introduced her to Gallardo, who they knew was a huge animal lover. Gallardo would’ve loved to adopt Jean Grey herself, but she knew someone that would love her even more. Her dad.

Gallardo’s dad was uninterested in adopting the dog when he first heard about her. He acted as if he had no interest in even meeting her. But Gallardo knew better.

Dog Destroying Couch

“We had lost our old dog and he didn’t want another anytime soon. He was still grieving,” said Gallardo.

Gallardo knew Jean Grey could cheer her dad up if he just gave her a chance. So, she organized a time for the two to meet each other. As expected, it was like love at first sight. He fell in love with Jean Grey the moment he met her.

An Unbreakable Bond

Jean Grey and her dad have grown closer every day since he adopted her. They truly are the perfect story of a rescue dog and the dad who said he didn’t want another dog. In fact, the two of them even have a special bedtime routine now.

Dad and Dog Bedtime Routine
Image: Screenshot, @alicegrgl/TikTok

Gallardo posted a video on TikTok of her dad putting Jean Grey to bed at night. It’s one of the most adorable videos you’ll ever see. First, he tucks her in with a blanket, making sure the blanket is tight and comfortable around her. Then, he gives her a pillow to rest her head. Before saying goodnight, he leaves a stuffed animal beside her for comfort. The video is set to the song “When She Loved Me” from Toy Story 2, which makes it even more heartwarming.

Losing a dog is incredibly hard, but it doesn’t mean you’ll never love another dog. There are so many dogs out there in need of a home, just like Jean Grey. It takes some time to know when you’re ready to adopt another dog. But if you choose a rescue dog, you’ll feel happy knowing you’ve saved another animal’s life.

Firefighters Celebrate The Life Of Their Station Dog With Beautiful Ceremony

fire station dog cover

Firefighters in Iquique, Chile are grieving the loss of their beloved station dog, Negro. After serving at the fire station for over a decade, the first responders held a special ceremony to celebrate his beautiful life.

Negro spent the last decade offering emotional support to the hardworking firefighters of Iquique city. His role involved standing guard at the fire station when the responders were away and offering a heartwarming welcome with each return. Negro was a source of positivity for so long at the fire station, which is why his death has made such an impact on his community.

Negro’s undying love for his firefighter family helped the responders push through on tough days. No matter how challenging a dangerous mission may have been, they always knew Negro was waiting at the station to greet them with slobbery kisses. Even as Negro began to age and his health declined, he continued to offer support to his firefighter family.

“This afternoon, one from our ranks left the earth — our four-legged firefighter.” – Iquique Fire Department

Negro’s health began to deteriorate rapidly in the last six months of his life, but he ultimately died peacefully at the station at 14 years of age. Though his years of service may have come to an end, the Iquique Fire Department wanted to make sure his work was never forgotten. Not only have they honored Negro with an official firefighter rank, but they held a beautiful ceremony in his memory.

“We said goodbye in a very emotional ceremony as we are saying goodbye to one of our people who was an important part of this organization.” – Iquique Fire Department

The fire department held an honor guard funeral at the station, allowing Negro to be carried out of life as the dedicated firefighter that he was. They lined up as Negro was carried by in a beautiful coffin, allowing each of them to say a final goodbye to their best furry friend.

A fire helmet was placed on Negro’s coffin as the service ensued, offering him the recognition he deserved for his years of service. The love for their fire dog was evident in the ceremony, and just how much his presence will be missed going forward.

Police Expose Abusive Puppy Mill With Dozens Of Traumatized Dogs

puppymill cover

A Michigan woman is facing the consequences of traumatizing dozens of dogs and puppies in a cruel breeding operation. In running a backyard puppy mill in deplorable conditions, she abused hundreds of animals that deserved so much more.

Local troopers in Michigan made a shocking discovery when responding to a call about an abandoned horse. Upon investigating the surrounding area, they were horrified by what they found.

Just next to where the horse was found was a cruel puppy mill harboring more than a hundred abused dogs. The conditions in this underground operation were so deplorable even shelter officials were shocked.

Rebecca Sue Johnson had cages of dogs forced into breeding and living in dismaying conditions of outright neglect and abuse. Delta County Officers removed a total of 65 adult dogs, 69 puppies, and 20 horses, all of which were in poor condition.

The dogs were found living in filth, covered in feces, and deprived of food and water. Not only were they forced to live in terrible conditions, they were all forcefully bred for the purpose of selling their puppies. Almost every adult female was either pregnant, currently nursing, or showed evidence of just weaning puppies.

By the time officials stepped in, each pup had suffered heartbreaking physical and emotional neglect. Almost every dog presented in severe mental distress, as well as illness that is common in canine hoarding areas. Thankfully for these furry friends, they are finally receiving the care they deserve.

The dogs were immediately pulled from the property and sent to the skilled team at the Delta Animal Shelter where they can heal from their traumatizing ordeal.

Over the span of two months, the multiple pregnant females gave birth to 100 additional puppies. The Delta Animal Shelter is now caring for over 200 dogs and puppies with the help of fosters. All will eventually need forever families to call their own.

In the time since this devastating discovery was made, Rebecca Sue Johnson was charged with animal cruelty and running an unregistered pound. Local police officials are also asking anyone that has purchased a puppy from her to come forward, as they work tirelessly to create a case against her.

We are so grateful for the endless work of the Delta Animal Shelter and every person who has offered support in this rescue operation. We hope each broken pup can find a loving family to heal their hearts.

UPDATE: Formerly Neglected Dog Overcomes Challenges In Loving Home

Ethan is doing well

Ethan the rescue dog has become a social media star after enduring a painful past and making a miraculous recovery. When the Kentucky Humane Society first found him, he was abandoned in a parking lot and 50 pounds underweight. But after reaching a healthy weight and maintaining a positive attitude, Ethan was adopted by the facilities director of the shelter. Ethan has had many challenges even after getting adopted, but his loving family has helped him through them.

He will likely always have lasting effects from his past trauma. But in a recent update, the family shared that the beloved rescue dog is doing well!

A Series of Setbacks

Sweet Ethan has had one successful day after another, thanks to the many people who believe in him. But in July 2021, his family revealed that he suffered a major setback. Halfway through the month, Ethan had seizures almost daily. His family worked closely with vets to find an explanation.

After a neurology appointment and an MRI, vets determined that the seizures were caused by past trauma. He has several lesions, along with additional brain damage in his frontal lobe. The extreme starvation he faced before being dumped at the shelter led to the recent seizures. So, Jeff Callaway, Ethan’s dad, gave him medication for his seizures right away.

At first, nothing seemed to work. But after trying multiple treatment methods, Ethan showed some improvements. He had a few good days in a row, which eventually led to no seizures at all. One of Ethan’s most recent Facebook updates shared a positive outlook on how well he’s doing.

“First and foremost, Ethan is doing very well. His loving personality and joy for people is back in full swing and he continues to bring smiles and happiness to everyone we run across. His seizures seem to be gone for now. But we monitor his health so closely every day,” a Facebook post reads.

Ethan is Still Thriving

As usual, Ethan continues to inspire his many fans. He gets to come to work with Callaway, where he has his own bed to rest in. He also gets endless amounts of love from vets, employees, and volunteers. He’s been getting to go out and do some of his favorite things again, including visiting dog-friendly breweries. After all, he is the “chief tasting officer” for Busch’s dog “beer.”

“Thank you to everyone for their fantastic support. I can’t say it enough, Ethan has the best extended family in the world. I think if there was anything Ethan needed, someone in his family would step up. Thank you for your understanding and patience as posts slowed down so we could focus all our attention on Ethan’s health,” the Facebook post added. “Thank you to the Kentucky Humane Society who support Ethan and myself everyday!! Just because he’s been adopted hasn’t meant their support has stopped. They are an amazing organization filled with amazing people whose sole focus is to make the lives of animals better. I’m proud to be able to play a part in that mission.”

Ethan might always face more struggles than other rescue dogs, but he’s fortunate enough to have many loving humans to help him through it. He is a brave pup and an inspiration to all!

12 Weird Things We Do As Dog Owners That We Try To Keep Secret

Let’s face it–we’re absolutely crazy about our pups. So crazy, in fact, that sometimes we act a little weird around our canine companions. Whether it’s baking them special treats or talking to them like they’re wittle babies, you know that your non-dog crazy friends would totally tease you if they knew how you really treat your dog.

But that’s okay, we understand. For every weird little way you show your dog love, there’s another person out there who does the same thing. Here are 12 weird things we dog owners do that we try to keep secret–but don’t worry, your secret’s safe with us!

1. Give your dog a ton of weird nicknames.

Your friends may have heard you call your pup “Sweetie” or even “Fluffbutt,” they haven’t heard the more colorful nicknames like “Mushy Maggy Moo Moo ” or “Snugz-a-rooni.”

2. Talk to them like they’re the cutest wittle baby-wabies in the world!

But you just wuv your puppy wuppy so much! Fun fact: studies show that our dogs actually prefer it!

3. Refer to yourself as “Mommy” or “Daddy.”

As in, “Daddy loves you” or “Give Mommy kisses!”

4. Let them slobber all over your face.

It’s a thing you do with those you love, right?

5. Bake your pooch special homemade dog cookies.

Because everyone loves baked goods that are made with love–even your pup! Try one of these 9 Best Homemade Dog Treats For Spoiling Your Pup.

6. Let your big dog sit in your lap.

What? Big dogs like to cuddle, too!

7. Figure out ways to sneak them into non-dog-friendly places.

If anyone asks, you just have a barking purse.

8. Pass them food under the table.

You know it’s a bad habit, but… just look at that face!

9. Order them a dog-friendly treat when you go to a restaurant or drive-thru.

After all, Fido gets hungry too! Check out this list of 37 Dog-Friendly Store And Restaurant Chains.

10. Let your dog sleep in bed with you.

Oh come on, everyone does it!

11. Have conversations with your canine.

Others may not understand it, but your dog definitely talks back–in her own way.

12. Make up excuses to bail on plans just to hang out with your dog.

Hmmm…get all dressed up and spend too much money or stay home in my PJ’s with a glass of wine and my furry best friend? We’ll take the latter!
