Ukrainian Woman Risks Her Life To Protect Over 700 Animals, Including A Lion!

Many people abandoned animals while fleeing Ukraine, but some heroes stayed behind to support the pets in need. Asya Serpinska, 77, walked toward the Russian conflict instead of running away. She was willing to put herself in danger because her animal shelter in Hostomel, a town above Kyiv, needed her.

Serpinska had about 600 dogs and 100 cats at the shelter when the invasion began. She also ended up taking in a variety of abandoned zoo animals. As if caring for the animals wasn’t hard enough, she also had her life threatened by Russian troops several times. But she always stood her ground for the sake of the animals.

Protecting the Pets of Ukraine

It wasn’t long before Russian forces were on all sides of Hostomel, but Serpinska didn’t let fear get the best of her. As soon as Serpinska knew that the Russians were trying to seize the town, she ran to the shelter and opened the cages so the dogs and cats wouldn’t be trapped inside. She and a few staff members stayed at the shelter amid the shelling.

“The first thought that crossed my mind was that I had to run to the shelter,” Serpinska said. “I was consciously going to war. My people were here, my dogs were here.”

Despite the danger surrounding the shelter, the volunteers kept up with the animals’ routines. They continued to feed them at regular times and clean the space. Serpinska’s friends begged her to leave Ukraine, but she refused to abandon the pets.

Zoo Needs Help Too

While protecting her shelter, Serpinska also witnessed a private zoo nearby go up in flames. The zoo’s owners had abandoned the facility, leaving the animals to fend for themselves. Serpinska and her team faced the smoke to rescue as many animals as possible, including peacocks and turtles. The lion was the only survivor that Serpinska’s team was unable to take with them.

“Only the lion got left behind,” Serpinska said. “For five weeks, we would go there under shelling and bullets to feed that lion, because it had been locked in a cage and we didn’t have the keys.”

The Russian soldiers later placed a mine near the lion’s cage, so Serpinska had to negotiate to prevent them from killing the innocent creature. The soldiers detonated the mine, but the lion survived. The shelter volunteers kept bringing food to the feline until Ukrainian forces reclaimed the area.

Facing Death Several Times

Ukrainians have now taken over Hostomel again, but the shelter staff faced many risky situations when Russian troops were there. Sadly, Serpinska’s dog named Gina was killed by Russian soldiers. A soldier was mad that Gina was barking at him through the fence, so he shot her. Serpinska was heartbroken, but she didn’t let her pain stop her from helping the other animals.

Russian soldiers came to the shelter several times after that, and Serpinska is lucky to be alive after each incident. At one point, the Russians locked everyone at the shelter in a room and told them they were putting a land mine on the door. They told them that if anyone opened the door, the mine would kill them.

After someone rescued them, they realized that there probably hadn’t been a mine on the door at all. The soldier had just said that to scare them. Each time Serpinska came face-to-face with Russian troops, she was likely terrified. But she never ran away because of the animals that needed her.

Recovering and Rebuilding

Now that Russia is no longer in control of Hostomel, the town is quiet. Most of the town is deserted, and buildings have been burned and destroyed. The shelter is also in rough shape and doesn’t have electricity back, but Serpinska is working to rebuild it. She’s already working hard to gather donations and find homes for the animals now that the town is more accessible than before.

“It doesn’t matter who you protect: children, people, animals, nature. The most important thing is responsibility,” said Serpinska. “Rescue animals to remain human.”

Despite everything, the shelter animals seem happy. Serpinska and her team have gone above and beyond to make sure they all stay safe during the horrors of the invasion. This world could use more selfless people like them.

Seresto Collars Accused Of Causing Illness And Death: Are They Guilty?

Since their release in 2012, there have been over 25 million Seresto Collars sold. In fact, data released by the Bayer Pharmaceutical Company in 2019 showed that over $300 million in revenue had been collected from the purchase of Seresto collars alone.

The collars work to prevent flea and tick infestations in household pets by releasing two active ingredients that spread across your dog’s skin and coat over time. The draw of this product, for many pet parents, is the affordable cost and the fact that Seresto claims to provide a full eight months of protection so long as the collar is properly fitted and maintained.

As great as this product may seem, there have been many reports surfacing of illness, injury, and even death occurring to beloved companions that sport the Seresto collar. And many parents are concerned that there may be a link between the collar and the health issues arising in dogs and cats with no history of physical illness.

Common issues referred to in client complaints include redness and irritation of the skin underneath the collar, hair loss, and even gastrointestinal abnormalities such as vomiting, diarrhea, or sudden loss of appetite.

What Are Veterinarians Saying?

In March of 2021, the Veterinary Information Network interviewed two licensed veterinary toxicologists in an effort to discover whether or not the link between Seresto collars and the reported health issues can be scientifically proven. The consensus was that these toxicologists would have a hard time making sense of the connection between the symptoms reported and the collars themselves due to the nature of the symptoms.

“Looking at these reports, these are very random things, ranging from ruptured ear drums… to liver failure, to heart problems, to kidney failure. The fact that the signs are very random makes me think that probably (the collar) is not involved.” – Dr. Tina Wismer, medical director of the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center

What Does Elanco Have To Say?

On March 18, 2021, a representative for Elanco Animal Health, the pharmaceutical company that currently owns the patent for Seresto collars, released a press statement defending the integrity of the collars. This came after a hearing at the U.S. Court of Representatives was held requesting the temporary removal of Seresto collars from the market while an investigation was performed. In response to this request, Elanco stated the following:

“All data and scientific evaluation used during the product registration process, and through Elanco’s robust pharmacovigilance review, supports the product safety profile and efficacy. Therefore, no market action, such as recall, is warranted, nor has it been suggested from any regulatory agency.”

While there have been rumors circulating of the possibility of counterfeit collars coming from big-name production giants such as Amazon, these rumors have not been confirmed by any research or scientific data.

Regardless of these rumors, veterinarians continue to encourage pet parents to purchase their flea, tick, and heartworm prevention from verifiable manufacturers and distributors for the continued health and safety of all pets.

Refuse Operator Discovers Puppy Buried In Trash Inside Apartment Dumpster

David Carlson, a refuse operator, was emptying the garbage bins at an Ohio apartment complex when he noticed something unusual. He saw a puppy in one of the bins, struggling underneath trash bags. Carlson had no idea what to do, but he knew he couldn’t leave the dog like that.

The puppy is a 6-month-old Pit Bull who’s very loving despite his abandonment. Carlson did the right thing and helped free the puppy from the dumpster. Now, the puppy will finally get the life of love he deserves!

Puppy Trapped in Dumpster

After finding the puppy in the dumpster, Carlson called his supervisor, Logan Sieg, to find out what to do. Sieg came to the apartment complex and climbed into the trash bin to rescue the puppy. The puppy was happy to accept help.

“It’s shocking seeing a dog in the dumpster. It’s not something you usually see. You know they don’t belong there,” Sieg said. “It was upsetting to see someone just throw [him] in there and get rid of [him] like that.”

Carlson and Sieg reached out to the Franklin County Dog Shelter, which was able to take the puppy into their care. The puppy did well at the shelter, and it’s all thanks to the kind workers. Carlson and Sieg went above and beyond to ensure that this dog survived.

Shortly after the puppy went up for adoption, he found the perfect family!

A Heartwarming Adoption!

Brandon Dawson and his wife adopted the Pit Bull puppy and named him Duke. They described the moment as a “love at first sight kind of thing.” As soon as they saw him at the shelter, he jumped up to hug them. Right away, they knew they couldn’t leave the shelter without him.

Duke is such a spirited young dog, so his humans are heartbroken that he had an unfortunate past. Duke is still recovering from the incident. He has several cuts and sores on his paws, along with some urine burns from having to lay in his own urine. It’s unclear who owned him before he ended up in the dumpster, but they clearly weren’t nice to him.

“He has full potential to live a healthy, long life and for someone to take that away from him is cruel and wrong,” Dawson said.

Dawson is grateful that Carlson found Duke before it was too late. The refuse operator’s detection skills saved Duke’s life and gave him a second chance at happiness. What a lucky pup!

Three-Legged Dog Fighting Cancer Rescues Baby Otter From River

Gus the Goldendoodle recently had his leg amputated after being diagnosed with cancer. Without his back leg, he can still run and play like he used to, but many everyday things have been an adjustment. His family wasn’t sure if he’d be able to swim again, but Gus didn’t want to wait to find out.

On Easter Day, Gus randomly jumped into the St. Croix River in Minnesota. When he returned to the shore, he had a tiny otter with him. Despite facing life-threatening struggles of his own, Gus had gone out of his way to save another animal’s life!

Gus’ Cancer Battle

Gus had a tumor removed earlier in the year, but vets discovered a second one shortly after. The 6-year-old dog was diagnosed with cancer and had to have one of his back legs amputated. He’s currently going through chemotherapy treatments at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Hospital.

Cleo Young worried that her dog wouldn’t be able to run again, but Gus quickly proved her wrong. On Easter, Young and her two daughters witnessed Gus swim for the first time since his leg amputation. He entered the river with a sense of determination. When Gus returned to the shore, his humans were shocked by what he found.

“First time swimming with three legs, and he comes out of the water with a baby otter in his mouth!” said Young’s granddaughter, Ella.

The family had no idea how to care for a baby otter. So, they rinsed him off, wrapped him in a towel, and rushed him to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (WRC). They just barely made it before they closed.

Baby Otter Survives!

WRC staff suspect that the otter is only a week old, which is way too young to be alone in the water. Most otters stay in a comfortable den with their mother for the first year of their life. Yet, no one knows where the otter’s mom is, so wildlife specialists will rehabilitate the otter pup.

If Gus hadn’t rushed to save this tiny otter, the critter probably wouldn’t have survived. At first, the otter was cold to the touch, so rescuers didn’t know if he’d make it. WRC transferred the otter to a different facility so he could receive the best care possible, and he’s doing well now.

“I think [Gus] knew the otter was hurting and something was wrong. He definitely got a lot of treats afterward,” Ella said.

Gus is a hero! Not only did he save a baby animal’s life, but he did so despite his many hardships. Gus isn’t out of the woods yet, but his family will continue to love and support him through his cancer treatment.

UPDATE: Veteran Whose Service Dog Was Killed During Wrongful Arrest Receives A New Puppy

Updated 12/15/21:

Joshua Rohrer, the homeless Iraq War veteran whose service dog was hit and killed by a car following his arrest, was recently gifted a puppy by a local good samaritan. Rohrer is now a doting dog dad to little Justice Rae, a playful Belgian Malinois puppy.

The special little pup’s name was carefully chosen. Justice, because Rohrer is fighting for justice for Sunshine Rae, and Rae as a reminder of the friend he lost. Like any puppy, Justice Rae is overflowing with energy. That energy is being harnessed to train Justice Rae to fulfill Sunshine’s legacy.

“She’s my new baby,” he told WBTV. “I’ve been training her to prepare her for the big shoes she’s gotta fill. She’s living her best life right now, enjoying the sunshine.”

This Veteran Has A New Mission On Home Turf

The traumatic experience has given Rohrer a new mission to execute: advocacy and education. Rohrer continues to demonstrate his resilience as he marches onward educating the public on the importance of service dogs.

“That seems to be the biggest hurdle for service dog teams and disabled people with service dogs, going out in public,” said Rohrer. “That service dog is like a wheelchair, it’s like a prosthetic. It is absolutely necessary for us to function independently in society. And people take that away from us on a daily basis.”

He’s also seeking justice for Sunshine and hopes to hold the police officers who arrested him accountable. As he petitions the courts to release body camera footage of his arrest, Justice Rae will remain right by his side.

Army veteran Josh Rohrer and his service dog, Sunshine, were a pair of familiar faces often seen around the Charlotte, North Carolina area. Rohrer served in the Army from 2002 to 2006. He was deployed to Iraq and Kuwait and suffers from PTSD as a result.

Luckily, Rohrer found comfort in the love and companionship of Sunshine.

“She’s definitely not a pet. Sunshine Ray is a highly trained service animal that is task trained to perform duties toward my disabilities, so she is crucial to my ability to be able to function in society,” Rohrer told WIS 10 News.

Rohrer And Sunshine Were Local Icons

The two-year-old Belgian Malinois had been specially trained as a service animal. Rohrer and Sunshine were inseparable and had become well-loved members of the community. The pair was never aggressive when asking for help but instead would spend their days just smiling and waving at passersby.

“He wasn’t doing anything wrong,” Jordan Huxhold told WBTV News. “He wasn’t begging for money. He never came up to a car until you would give him money. He was just happy-go-lucky, smiling and waving at people. That was a joy for him.”

One Phone Call Shattered Rohrer’s World

Someone called the Gastonia Police Department last week to report that Rohrer was using a dog to panhandle. The police arrived and arrested Rohrer, firmly placing him on the hood of the cruiser during the ordeal. Sunshine jumped onto the hood in an attempt to help her dad, just as she had been trained.

“She was just doing her job, licking me and trying to calm me down,” Rohrer told Yahoo News. “The cops started yelling at her and me, telling me to get her to settle down but they wouldn’t allow me to physically get control of her.”

Sunshine was ultimately tased and took off with a prong still stuck in her side. Someone who knows Roher was able to find Sunshine and was caring for her while Rohrer was in jail. Somehow, Sunshine managed to escape. Her body was found a few days later. The vibrant, loving, protective little girl had been run over by a car.

Community Members Want Justice

Now the community is asking for justice, not just for Rohrer but for Sunshine also. Dozens of people came together to hold a vigil for sweet Sunshine. Rohrer is hoping to be able to find another dog, though he knows his bond with Sunshine was a once-in-a-lifetime kind of love. Despite what he has been through recently and the current exacerbation of his PTSD, Rohrer has one message:

“We can all come together as a community and stand up to the things we believe in,” Rohrer said. “It’s so easy just to be kind to one another and show support, and just smile.”

Tyler lost Coco seven months ago. At the time, she lived in Denver, Colorado, but moved to Dallas, Texas, a few months later. When she moved, there was still no sign of Coco, which left her heartbroken.

But then, a woman found a small dog running loose in northern Denver. Denver Animal Protection took in the dog and scanned her for a microchip. Sure enough, it showed Tyler’s contact information.

When animal control notified Tyler that Coco had been found, she couldn’t believe it. She rushed to Denver as quickly as she could, unable to contain her excitement.

“I couldn’t believe it. I thought it was a joke,” Tyler said.

Reunited at Last!

When Tyler arrived in Denver, a news reporter captured a video of the beautiful reunion. It starts with Tyler sitting in a chair, talking about how thrilled she is. Then, when they open the door to let Coco in, it becomes even more heartwarming.

Coco immediately runs to her mom, who squeals with joy. Tyler scoops up the Yorkie and cuddles her while the dog showers her with kisses. Tyler cries happy tears, as do many of the witnesses. Coco’s face looks very scruffy and not well-maintained, but she’ll get cleaned up soon. All that matters is that she’s home safe and sound.

“Anybody out there who’s got a missing dog, they’re coming home,” Tyler said. “Just have faith.”

Denver Animal Protection used this story to remind dog parents to microchip their pets. Not only that but make sure the information on their microchip and tags are always up to date with your current information. That way, they’ll have a better chance of coming home if they get lost.

It’s amazing that Tyler and Coco got a happy ending. No one knows where Coco was for those seven months, but Tyler will be sure to give her extra love to make up for the lost time.
