We know he’s a superhero on the screen but did you know Jake Gyllenhaal is a superhero in real life? Yep! He’s played Mysterio, a marine, a detective and a cowboy. Now he can add dog rescuer to his impressive resume! One Harlequin Great Dane is safe thanks to the big-hearted movie star.
A Gentle Giant Was Running Free
The incident went down in Tribeca at the intersection of Laight and Hudson streets on a Thursday morning. Eyewitnesses say the Great Dane was on a leash but he managed to get away from his human companion. The feisty fella ended up smack dab in the middle of New York City traffic!
One witness told Page Six that she recognized the hero has Jake Gyllenhaal. She assumed he was trying to flag down a cab. Turns out he was actually trying to motion for the dog to come to him. The witness reported that the gargantuan Great Dane looked like he was in shock. Wouldn’t you be if you found yourself in a busy New York City intersection while Jake Gyllenhaal was waving at you?
Ol’ Jake didn’t think twice. He knew he had to save the spotted wandered. The Spiderman actor did what superheroes do best and stopped traffic as he walked into the roadway. He was able to calm the unharmed dog and lead him safely back to his worried mom on the sidewalk. Apparently he even took some time to educate the dog-mom about different leash options to be sure it never happens again.
Superhero Strength Needed For A Supersized Doggo
Harlequin Great Danes like the one Gyllenhaal saved can grow to be nearly three feet tall when on all fours. They are taller than most humans when they stand on their hind legs. Black and white spots are what give this particular breed the title of “Harlequin.” This pup was actually first mistaken as a Dalmatian because their coat is so similar. Their size, however, is a different story. Great Danes can reach 175 lbs according to the American Kennel Club! They’re also known as the “Apollo of Dogs.” It’s no wonder it took a superhero to save him!
Gyllenhaal is a dog dad himself. He has Atticus, a German Shepherd, and Boo Radley who is a Puggle. He expressed his love for dogs to W Magazine last year.
“I love dogs, I just love them. They are so playful. I think they bring that out in us, if we allow it. I don’t think I’m that playful, generally. I need to be reminded of it. So, they remind me of that.”
