You know that feeling when you’re approaching the door of the place you need to go and see a sign taped to the door? Usually your first thought is “Uh oh, what went wrong here to warrant a printed sign?” But if your destination this week was Minneapolis Animal Care & Control, the sign taped to that door is one you’d probably love to see.
This weekend, the City Of Minneapolis Twitter account shared an image of that sign which read in all caps: ALL ADOPTABLE ANIMALS HAVE BEEN ADOPTED.
“The shelter is clear! Dozens of dogs, cats and small critters found new homes today during our Clear the Shelter event. Thanks to our staff, volunteers and adopters for making it happen.”
Even if you were planning to adopt an animal here and saw this sign, it must warm your heart to know there aren’t any there in need of a home right now. (There are still some looking for fosters, though!)
As stated, the wonderful news is a result of a Clear The Shelters event held there on Friday November 22nd. On this day, all adoption fees were waived.
On Facebook, the overwhelmed shelter described the scale of the adoption event.
“MACC had around 300 Minnesotans show up to stand in 30 degree weather to wait in line to adopt an animal today. Most animals had multiple applicants.”
Whether it was the lack of fees or just the spirit of giving, the event was extremely popular. Check out that line going way out the door!
The adoptions occurred on a first-come, first-served basis. In some cases, multiple adopters wanted the same animal, and a drawing was held to determine who was the lucky new parent. The shelter was only open for adoptions from 1pm-6pm, so this all happened really fast!
“Thanks to all those who stopped in. Staff and volunteers expected about 50-100 people and the generosity of our MN community was greater than anticipated, so it was a *bit* chaotic in the building. Staff and volunteers debriefed after the event to take learnings from today to improve future Clear The Shelters events!”
It’s rare to hear about demand at an animal shelter exceeding supply! Must be that Minnesota kindness you hear so much about.
Well, it seems like the season of giving has really done its job this year. All this shelter’s former residents will be eating their turkey-flavored food with new families.
Congratulations to everyone whose families got a little bit bigger this Thanksgiving!
