Meet “Trooper,” The Puppy Pulled From Wildfire Rubble

For the past few months, wildfires have been raging across the west coast. Acres upon acres burned down, many had no choice but to evacuate, and several communities suffered. Brave and diligent firefighters work hard to curb the damage. They also do search and rescue.

As rescue crews examined the damage in Berry Creek, California earlier this month, they made a fortuitous discovery. The Butte County Sheriff’s Department shared on Facebook:

“Yesterday, as BCSO deputies and members of BCSO Search and Rescue were searching through properties impacted by the fire, they made an unexpected and welcomed discovery on a large property in Berry Creek, this adorable puppy.”

The pup they found had ash and soot all over his tiny body. He suffered some minor burns, so Animal Control brought him to Valley Oaks Veterinary Center in Chico for treatment. Clearly, this little guy is a survivor.

After a bit of investigating, police learned that the property owner has several dogs and was not able to locate them all before he had to evacuate for his safety. A woman named Terrana Rose self-identified as the man’s sister on Facebook, explaining:

“My brother had several dogs that he loved dearly but was unable to take with him when he finally decided to evacuate. He didn’t want to leave because he didn’t want to leave his animals. He stayed as long as he could. So he didn’t abandon them, he just couldn’t take all the dogs when he finally decided that he could not stay any longer and he got a ride out with a neighbor.”

She said her brother was and still is heartbroken at having to leave the dog behind. Rose also added that she appreciates the people who stepped up and offered to adopt Trooper.

“I just want to say thank you for all the people who have come forward to say they would adopt him. I hope he gets a good home because he has no home to take him home to. So again thank you for rescuing him and bless who can ever give him a good home.”

Given the circumstances in which they found him, deputies named the puppy “Trooper.”

People Express Their Gratitude To Trooper’s Rescuers
