Brave, Protective Dog Chases Shark Away From The Shore

It takes a dog’s unconditional love and inherent drive to protect to take on something as intimidating as a shark. An incredible video taken in Australia last month illustrates this, showing a brave pup scaring off a shark that got too close to shore (and humans.)

I know people become extremely concerned when it comes to the issue of a dogs’ safety. Believe me, I absolutely feel the same way. So if you read the headline and jumped to this page to verify, let me assuage your fears right from the start: the dog is completely unharmed. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY NOT A STORY ABOUT A SHARK ATTACKING A DOG!

This story should instead serve more as a portrait of a dog’s pure loyalty and commitment to protecting humans. When Tilly sensed a threat in the form of an intimidating ocean creature, she sprung into action. Here’s a quote about this particular shark from Florida Museum that should calm your anxious nerves a bit:

“Blacktip reef shark have occasionally been known to bite people that are swimming or wading but do not pose a serious threat to humans. The International Shark Attack File (ISAF) has recorded just 11 unprovoked blacktip reef shark bites on humans since 1959.”

The maximum size for this type of shark is no longer than 5 feet. All this is just to say: serious risk of physical harm is relatively low (much much lower than say, driving in a car with your dog.) This small shark swimming a little too close to shore isn’t exactly a terrifying man-eater. Regardless, Tilly saw another animal approaching her precious goods and had to do something about it.

Tilly “The Guard Dog”

This remarkable video comes to us from Jack Strickland of Back 2 Basics Adventures in Australia. He received it from another camera operator. As the camera filmed the shark swimming in circles along the shore in Haggerstone Island, Queensland, it happened to capture the dog’s passionate response.

Once Tilly has chased the threat away, she confidently surveys her conquered domain. I’d trust her with my life!

Tilly is an Australian Kelpie, a sheepdog who excels at herding and well, chasing. Her skills are apparent in her fearless actions. This energetic breed, as you can tell, makes a wonderfully intelligent and loyal companion.

It should go without saying that it’s best to supervise a dog swimming in the ocean, as Tilly was. I hope her display of bravery makes you smile.
