Senior Lab Gets New Beginning After 1,134 Days At Shelter

Capone gets adopted

Good things come to those who wait! And no one has waited longer than Capone the 10-year-old Lab mix. He spent 1,134 days at Animal Friends in Pennsylvania after being transferred there from a different shelter. Day after day, he waited for someone to give him the loving home he deserved, but for over three years, he was continuously disappointed. He might’ve had more complex needs than the other adoptable dogs, but he knew he was still deserving of a loving family.

Luckily, all the waiting and hoping paid off in the end. Capone is now starting his new life surrounded by people who will never let him feel lonely or overlooked again!

Patience Pays Off

The Animal Friends shelter staff and volunteers fell in love with Capone the moment they met him. His days were filled with walks, playtime, and cuddle sessions. But at the end of the day, he had to rest at the shelter all alone. He knew there had to be more to life than that.

Capone had several medical concerns during his stay, and his hearing and vision are not as great as they used to be. But the shelter remained confident that there was a family out there for him. To help him get adopted, they trained his brain often. Capone became the master of mental stimulation toys, and he could always find a treat no matter how well the staff hid it.

On top of his health, he also had other specific requests for his new home, which made his journey even harder. He needed a home with a fenced-in yard, and he wanted to make sure he was the only pet. He also preferred a home with no children. All these requests made a family hard to come by, but he kept on dreaming. And soon enough, those dreams became a reality!

Capone’s New Life

A kind couple finally showed interest in this sweet older pup. They fostered him through the shelter’s foster-to-adopt program to ensure that he was a good fit for them. In a foster home, Capone was more relaxed and content, so his lovable personality shone through. Sure enough, Capone’s foster parents quickly fell in love with him and officially adopted him on day 1,134.

“They say good things come to those who wait … and that couldn’t be more true for our sweet Capone who FINALLY found his new family yesterday. Capone, our longest-term resident, has been with us since November 2017. And, we couldn’t be more thrilled to announce that yesterday, his foster family made it official and adopted this handsome boy!” Animal Friends wrote on Facebook.

Capone made many friends throughout his life, especially among the shelter staff and volunteers. They’ll miss him very much, but they’re overjoyed that he finally got his happily ever after. Capone’s story shows us that it’s never too late for your dreams to come true. Congratulations, sweet pup!
