A Pit Bull known as “Monster” isn’t as scary as she sounds. She’s a sweetheart who loves being near the water, especially when it’s with her human, Kieth Soffes. Monster loves going on daily trips out of San Leon, Texas, on her human’s shrimp boat.
However, even the strongest swimmers can get into trouble at times. One day, Monster fell off the boat when Soffes wasn’t paying attention. He had no idea where his dog was for five days, but he later learned that the brave Pit Bull had gone on quite the adventure.
Falling Overboard
When Soffes and Monster were out on the shrimp boat one day, Monster disappeared. By the time Soffes realized she wasn’t on the boat, he was already five miles from the shore. He knew she must have fallen overboard, but he didn’t see her in the water.
Soffes searched up and down the coast for several hours, but he didn’t see his beloved pup. So, the Texas resident turned to Facebook to ask others to keep an eye out for Monster.

“I lost the one thing in this world that I truly loved. My best friend. Monster dog. We don’t really know what happened. We think she fell off the boat on a slick calm day… she had been on the boat her whole life since she was a puppy,” Soffes wrote. “I searched and searched… hopefully, somebody picked her up. We were around marker number 71. If anyone hears any talk about her please contact me. Totally heartbroken.”
Five days went by with no sightings, but then, a woman reached out to Soffes. She said she saw a dog that looked like Monster at a park. Considering how far the park was from where the boat had been, Soffes thought it was unlikely. But, of course, he went there to look for the dog.
An Unbelievable Journey
Sure enough, Monster was found in a trailer park near where the woman had mentioned. A man had found Monster and tied her up to his trailer next to his other dog. Monster likely swam several miles to get to that location.
“I was crying so hard I couldn’t even talk. She was giving me so many kisses,” Soffes said. “I think her swimming every day saved her life. Just her being on the boat, being used to the water.”
Monster is understandably tired, but other than that, she seems to be doing well. Soffes said that from now on, he’ll keep a life jacket and a tracking device on her when they go out on boats.
