RECALL: Prescription Dog Food Faces Mislabeling Error

Purina mislabeling recall

Several pup parents were shocked when they noticed a different consistency in their dogs’ canned food. A few customers reported the issue to the company, who discovered that some of their products were mislabeled. The company is the popular dog food brand Purina, which quickly resolved the issue.

Purina recalled the products affected by the mislabeling. Instead of being a prescription dog diet, the food inside the cans was one of the brand’s regular lines of wet dog food. The food itself is not dangerous, but it may be harmful to dogs needing a specific diet.

Which Products Were Recalled?

Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EN Gastroenteric Low Fat prescription wet dog food was recalled. The cans labeled as this formula had Purina ONE True Instinct Tender Cuts in Gravy With Real Turkey & Venison inside them instead. The correct food is a pate, but it had gravy with chunks in it instead.

Here are some ways to spot a recalled can without opening it:

  • UPC: 38100 17599
  • Product Code: 22581159 L4TR6
  • Best Before: September 2024

Purina wasn’t aware of the issue until some customers reported it. Then, they voluntarily recalled the products out of an abundance of caution. The company wrote in a statement:

We became aware of the issue after being contacted by several pet owners who observed the texture of food in their PPVD EN Low Fat cans was not the same as previous meals.

The mislabeled product contains chunks in gravy, while the correct product looks more like a pate consistency.

While we have not received any reports to date of illness or injury to dogs fed this mislabeled product, we are conducting this voluntary recall as a precaution.

What Should Pet Parents Do with the Affected Products?

The recalled product was only available via prescription, so it was primarily distributed through vet clinics. Veterinarians and retailers have been asked to remove the affected products.

Customers who have these products at home are asked not to feed them to their dogs. They will receive the correct product as soon as possible. The food itself is not harmful, but dogs on this prescription diet may have a sensitivity to traditional dog food or may have a difficult time digesting fat.

If you have questions or concerns about this recall, you can call Purina at 800-579-7733. Their operating hours are 8 am to 5 pm CT on Monday through Saturday. You can also reach out to them via their contact page.
